What started off as a student joke has now become the most important day in the global retail calendar.

1) Singles' Day originated at Nanjing University in 1993, and was created by students as an “anti-Valentine’s Day”.
2) It was originally called Bachelors' Day and it’s a Chinese holiday that celebrates people who are not in relationships.
3) The date was chosen because the numeral 1 resembles a bare stick, which is Chinese internet slang for an unmarried man who does not add 'branches' to his family tree.
4) November 11th has since become the world’s biggest 24-hour shopping event and the revenue surpasses even that of the US equivalent, Black Friday.
5) For some prominent brands, November 11th one-day sales equal 20 to 40 percent of their annual sales.
